UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
