The Reform UK leader Accuses Teachers of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Racial Topics
Nigel Farage has asserted that educators would initiate walkouts shortly after a Reform UK election victory, accusing them of “harming young minds” by instructing students that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and Caucasian students are perpetrators.
At a gathering for a Michigan-based religious institution, Farage outlined his viewpoint on British schools, stating that the “Marxist left” had “taken over schooling”.
“I expect a teachers’ strike soon after securing a victory,” he remarked in response to questions.
“They are corrupting young minds. They instruct children to be ashamed of their country. They are telling an eight-year-old black child that he is a victim and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is an oppressor. They are dividing us, not uniting us. They promote this negative culture.”
In response to Farage’s claims, the head of a major education union rejected the idea that the schools were under Marxist influence as “nonsense”. He pointed out that any strikes must relate to teachers’ terms and conditions, and doubted whether the party would target these immediately upon entering government.
“Farage has built his political career on coded rhetoric and currently, like Trump, he is targeting educators and their unions for a fight,” Kebede stated.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. I don’t – and nor does my union – advocate such divisive theories as he’s suggesting … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, including education … and he would be a disaster for education and children.”
Reform, which tops surveys by about 10 points, has not set out much detail on a proposed education policy and does not appear to have appointed an education spokesperson.
Nonetheless, his comments indicated the group would reform the educational framework. He said: “We have got a massive job with schooling – truly monumental. Moreover, we can’t do it in six months or a year; it requires years, a long-term effort to reform.”
Farage expressed that younger generations are receptive to critical thinking, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Paying tribute to a conservative activist, Farage said: “My goal for schooling is to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that there are two points of view and you make up your own mind as opposed to what’s happening now where one is virtuous and one is evil. It’s a massive job in both Britain and America.”
Reform has previously clashed with a major educators’ organization, after Kebede called the party “far right and racist” and described the leader as “a poundshop Donald Trump”.
Farage has accused the union head with being “a self-declared Marxist” … an individual intent that young minds be corrupted at school, their minds should be poisoned regarding national issues” and has argued that the organization seeks to brainwash youth opposed to his party.
Almost one million people work in schools in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the remainder being assistants and administrative personnel. The major education union has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over teacher pay and conditions in 2023 caused widespread disruption in educational institutions and millions of days of lost learning for children.
At the US event, the Reform leader also vowed to promote the online educational material of the institution in the UK. He said such groups were “part of the fightback”, noting: “I am serious. I will help garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of youth to your online courses. I pledge this now and I will follow through.”
The college, a religious educational establishment, provides complimentary classes. Its website states: “Comprehensive learning is vital for well-being and to perpetuate the blessings of freedom. It offers these beautiful courses for no charge to all who wish to learn.”
