Israelis have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A senior representative involved in the talks said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The source stated the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Critical Points in Discussions

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Future management of the region

Citizen Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home again, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist a participant stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and locality areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the dusk falls, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Every second we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported two more fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, medics reported.
