Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Steady Energy Shipments to the Indian Nation in Snub of Washington Sanctions

In a unambiguous message to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “continuous” deliveries of crude oil to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in Delhi and affirmed their relationship were “resilient to external pressure.”

A Message Directed at the Western Countries

The statement, delivered Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its longstanding relations with Moscow. The backdrop comes after earlier US actions, notably additional import duties targeting New Delhi due to its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a reliable source of energy resources and all necessary for the advancement of India’s energy sector,” Putin said. “Russia is prepared to continue ensuring the steady supply of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without naming energy directly, echoed the sentiment by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and important pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the summit, during a TV appearance, Putin had challenged Washington's stance over India's dealings with Russia. The president questioned, “When Washington is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India have the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival represented his first trip to India following the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a deliberate effort to demonstrate that the friendship between the heads of state remained intact.

An Unusual Welcome

In a rare step, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin right off the plane. Both leaders embraced warmly as old friends before enjoying a one-on-one meal the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister later described India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “based on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Ties

The bilateral summit resulted in several key agreements regarding defence and economic cooperation. One significant result was the completion of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold mutual trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the target year.

The leaders also vowed to restructure their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia is still India's biggest source of weapons, its share has reduced over the past decade as India aims to widen its procurement.

Their communique highlighted plans for the joint production of cutting-edge military systems, even if direct details of purchases such as the fifth-generation aircraft were omitted.

Overall, Russia and India reiterated that amid the “present intricate, tense, and uncertain international environment, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to foreign influence.”
