Meteorologists have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Readings are expected to be low, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is likely to be affected.
• People are advised to leave additional time for travel on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Advisories Released

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this meant the weather was likely to cause major effects across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
