Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
