The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
