Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.
A new term emerged several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what international harmony manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
