A Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book accommodation after getting there, however once I got there, a big convention was happening and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering towards the casino, believing I might spend the evening somewhere that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
I must have looked confused as a young woman saw me wandering around the city and wondered if everything was alright. I recounted my predicament and without hesitation she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at the local university – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She even offered some food: one filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot to rest for the evening.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook being a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. Back then I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.
I never did go to the Australian National University, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that life has returned her good deed abundantly. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
